India vs Afghanistan Set for Asian Games 2026 Cricket Quarter-Final on September 28

The India vs Afghanistan Asian Games 2026 cricket quarter-final was scheduled for September 28 at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. The match was expected to be an important knockout clash as India began their campaign to defend the men’s cricket gold medal won at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. However, persistent rain eventually forced the quarter-final to be abandoned without a result, with India progressing to the semi-finals on the basis of the tournament’s qualification rules and their superior ICC ranking.

India vs Afghanistan Asian Games 2026 Quarter-Final

India entered the Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket competition directly at the quarter-final stage because of their continental T20I ranking. The team is led by Shreyas Iyer and includes several established T20 players, including Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar.

Afghanistan, meanwhile, reached the knockout stage after finishing second in Group A. Nepal topped the group after their match against Japan was abandoned because of rain, while Afghanistan secured their place in the quarter-finals.

The quarter-final was therefore expected to provide another India-Afghanistan contest shortly after their recent T20I meetings in India.

India’s Gold Medal Defence

India entered the Asian Games 2026 with the objective of defending their men’s cricket gold medal. The Indian women’s team had already secured gold at the Games, adding further attention to the men’s campaign.

Unlike the 2023 Hangzhou edition, when India fielded a second-string squad under Ruturaj Gaikwad, the 2026 team features several first-choice T20I players. Jasprit Bumrah, Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Arshdeep Singh and other experienced names give the squad a strong mix of international experience and young talent.

Afghanistan Brings a Different Challenge

Afghanistan also arrived with a competitive squad, although several familiar international names were absent. The team is led by Darwish Rasooli, while players such as Najibullah Zadran, Karim Janat, Mohammad Ishaq and Nangeyalia Kharoti were among the key names in the squad.

Afghanistan’s spin options were expected to be particularly important in the knockout stage. Young spinner Arab Gul Momand had also impressed during the group phase, taking four wickets against Japan.

Rain Disrupts India vs Afghanistan Quarter-Final

Weather became the biggest factor surrounding the India vs Afghanistan Asian Games 2026 quarter-final. Persistent rain had already affected several matches at the tournament, raising concerns about whether the knockout fixture would get enough playing time.

Those concerns eventually materialised. The quarter-final was abandoned because of rain and a wet outfield, meaning neither India nor Afghanistan could complete a competitive innings. Under the tournament rules, India advanced to the semi-finals because of their higher seeding and ICC ranking.

What’s Next for India?

With the quarter-final abandoned, India moved into the Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket semi-finals. The team’s next opponent will emerge from the corresponding quarter-final involving Sri Lanka and Nepal. The semi-finals are scheduled for October 1, followed by the bronze-medal and gold-medal matches on October 3.

The India vs Afghanistan quarter-final may not have produced any cricketing action, but it remained an important fixture in India’s Asian Games gold-medal defence. Attention now shifts to the semi-final, where India will look to continue their campaign for another Asian Games cricket title.
