Hansi Flick Backs Lamine Yamal for Ballon d’Or After Record-Breaking Champions League Display

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has thrown his full support behind Lamine Yamal’s Ballon d’Or ambitions after the teenage superstar produced another outstanding performance in the UEFA Champions League. Yamal scored and provided two assists as Barcelona defeated Feyenoord 5-1, while also breaking a major Champions League record.

Hansi Flick Endorses Lamine Yamal for Ballon d’Or

Following Barcelona’s emphatic victory, Flick was asked about Yamal’s chances of winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or. The German coach did not hesitate to back his young star, describing him as an exceptional and special player who deserves the prestigious individual award.

Flick’s comments come at an important time, with Yamal already established among the leading contenders for the award. The Barcelona winger has continued to attract attention because of his consistency, creativity and ability to influence matches at the highest level.

Yamal Breaks Kylian Mbappe’s Champions League Record

Yamal’s performance against Feyenoord was particularly significant because it helped him break a Champions League record previously held by Kylian Mbappe.

The 19-year-old registered two assists before scoring a superb direct free-kick in Barcelona’s 5-1 victory. Those contributions took his Champions League tally to 21 goal involvements, consisting of 11 goals and 10 assists. He therefore moved beyond Mbappe’s previous record of 20 goal contributions by a teenager in the competition.

The achievement further underlines how quickly Yamal has developed into one of European football’s most influential young players.

Another Major Ballon d’Or Milestone

Yamal’s Ballon d’Or case is also strengthened by his remarkable consistency at such a young age. He has become the first player to receive three Ballon d’Or nominations before turning 20, highlighting his extraordinary rise since breaking into Barcelona’s senior team.

His latest Champions League display provides another compelling argument for his candidacy, particularly because performances on Europe’s biggest stage often carry significant weight when individual awards are considered.

Barcelona’s Rising Leader

Yamal’s influence at Barcelona now extends beyond goals and assists. He was recently selected as one of the club’s vice-captains, becoming part of the leadership group at only 19. During the Feyenoord match, he also took the captain’s armband after senior players left the field.

His growing leadership role reflects how important he has become to Flick’s team.

Can Lamine Yamal Win the Ballon d’Or?

The competition for the 2026 Ballon d’Or remains intense, with several global stars in contention. However, Yamal’s combination of individual brilliance, Champions League performances and continued development makes him a serious candidate.

With Flick publicly backing him and his record-breaking European numbers continuing to grow, Lamine Yamal has strengthened his claim to become the youngest Ballon d’Or winner in history.
