IND vs ENG: India’s Test Record at Old Trafford – Have They Ever Won in Manchester

Old Trafford in Manchester is one of England’s most historic and iconic cricket grounds. With a reputation for dramatic weather, pace-friendly wickets, and passionate crowds, it’s a venue where England have traditionally dominated visiting sides. For the Indian cricket team, however, Old Trafford has been more of a fortress for their opponents than a happy hunting ground.

A History of Struggles in Manchester

India’s first Test match at Old Trafford dates back to 1936, and ever since, it has been a venue where they’ve consistently found the going tough. Over the years, India have played several Tests here, but victories have eluded them time and again. The English seamers, often aided by swing-friendly conditions, have proved too much for Indian batters, particularly in the early decades.

In fact, as of 2025, India have never won a Test match at Old Trafford. Out of the nine Tests played here, England have won four, while the rest have ended in draws. The 1971 and 1982 Tests were notable for India's resilience, managing to hold out for draws despite being under pressure. However, wins have remained out of reach.

Why Has Victory Been So Elusive?

Several factors contribute to India's struggles in Manchester. The pitch at Old Trafford traditionally offers bounce and movement — ideal for fast bowlers, especially under cloudy skies. Indian teams in the past, often more comfortable on subcontinent pitches, found it difficult to adapt to the extra swing and pace.

Moreover, England's familiarity with the conditions and a strong home record further compounded India’s challenge. While recent Indian teams boast stronger pace attacks and more overseas success, Old Trafford remains one of the few English venues where India have not yet cracked the code.

Can the Tide Turn?

Given the rise of India’s fast-bowling unit and improved overseas performances in the last decade, there’s renewed hope. A win at Old Trafford would not only break the jinx but also mark a symbolic moment in India’s evolving Test legacy abroad.

Until then, Manchester remains one of the last unconquered bastions for Team India in England.
