4th Test Day 3: England Takes Command Against India in Manchester Clash

Day 3 of the 4th Test at Old Trafford saw England firmly seize control in the India‑England series. After bowling India out for 358 in their first innings, the hosts piled on the pressure with a massive 544/7 by stumps, securing an imposing lead of 186 runs.

England's Powerplay

England’s openers, Zak Crawley (84) and Ben Duckett (94), combined for a 166‑run stand that set the tone for dominance. Neither looked rushed, capitalizing on loose bowling to maintain a steady run rate of over five an over before lunch.

Root's Record-Breaking Captain's Knock

The highlight was Joe Root’s sublime 150, his 38th Test century. With that elegant innings, he moved past legends like Ponting, Dravid, and Kallis to become the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket history, second only to Sachin Tendulkar.

Root shared a vital 142-run partnership with captain Ben Stokes, who battled cramps to reach a gritty fifty (77*). Though he retired hurt mid-innings, Stokes returned later and remained unbeaten at stumps, contributing to England’s unassailable position.

India’s Struggles and Bright Spots

India’s bowlers found it tough. Jasprit Bumrah battled physical discomfort and was largely ineffective with the new ball. Mohammed Siraj also struggled to make inroads early on .

That said, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar did produce moments of resistance, chipping in with two wickets each and helping India staunch the flow late in the day .

What Lies Ahead

With Day 3 complete, England’s stronghold is clear. Leading by 186 runs with wickets in hand and a flat pitch on their side, they are well-placed to push for a one-innings victory and seal the series at 3–1.

India, in contrast, must dig deep. Their best hope lies in bouncing back with quality new-ball bowling on Day 4 and hoping for early breakthroughs. Surviving three more sessions will require fight—not flair—from the visitors.
